JULY 24TH CR100 GROUP TRAINING 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago
These training days are organized so that CR100 prospective racers and registered racers alike can see the 3 different sections of the river without the hassle of organizing individual shuttles. They are not mandatory but highly recommended to test equipment, test yourself, test your partner and to get a small taste of what to expect during the race.

All of the trainings will follow the same format. Here is how it all works…
Meet at the designated put-in at 7:00 am to unload boats. At approx 7:15 am we will all drive our own vehicles to the take-out, where we will meet the transport bus. Lock and drop off your vehicle and load into the van for the trip back to the put-in area. Tandem boats need to only send one person to run in the shuttle van while the other can stay and watch boats. Use of this shuttle service is not required to participate in the training and those choosing to arrange their own shuttles may do so, on their own. We will start paddling at approx 10-15 minutes after returning to designated put-in roughly 8:15 am. Paddlers paddle at their own pace and it is recommended that slower paddlers put in as soon as possible after returning to put-in. After the paddle we typically meet to grab a bite to eat and discuss the adventures of the day. All are welcomed to join in.

Required Gear
Boat & Paddles - rentals are available through Rising Phoenix Adventures on a first come first serve basis reservations are required.
PFD – 1 per paddler (game wardens have been checking)
Enough food and water for the entire leg as there are no refreshment stands on the course.
An electrolyte drink mix is highly recommended as the Texas heat is relentless this time of year.

Date: July 24, 2010
Meeting Time: Promptly 7:00 am at put-in to drop boats and drive shuttle
Leg 1: Bastrop to Smithville
Distance: 25 miles
Put in: Fisherman’s Park Bastrop,Texas
Take-out: Vernon L Richards River Bend Park Smithville, Texas
Start paddling: Approx 8:15-8:30am
Cost: $10.00 per person that utilizes the shuttle service

Reservations required space is limited to 40 rsvp cr100info@yahoo.com

Participation in the group training paddle is at your own risk. Dial 911 for all emergencies. The CR100 is purely a shuttle organizer.

Just a reminder if you don't use the shuttle, the training is free.

This is an unsanctioned unofficial get together. Paddle at your own pace paddle and at your own risk. The CR100 is purely the organizer of the shuttle service. All are welcomed to join in wether you are racing in the CR100 or not. Looks like we will have close to 30 boats going down the river.

Thanks for organizing, Mike. It was a nice day to be on the river. I would like to place an advance order for for less wind next time, ok?

Re:JULY 24TH CR100 GROUP TRAINING 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago
Thanks to all who came out for the training run. We had 25 boats use the shuttle and another 8 that ran their own shuttle. A great turn out for our first run with an overcast day and decent flow.

I unfortunately did not paddle this training run because of a slow Safari recovery but I would like to hear your times and boat choices. This helps other racers who could not make the training estimate their times.

Thanks again hope to see everyone on the 7th and 14th.

Thanks for organizing the shuttle. Debbie and I paddled our C2 and did the 26 mile run in 4:23 (avg 5.9) with one swim break and lots of zig zagging since I was learning to drive. The water was up which made for some nice flow in areas. See you at the next run and hopefully we'll be a little more recovered from safari.

I was in the bright orange Spirit PRS and finished in 03:55:15. Took one short break to repurpose my PFD as a seat pad.

Re:JULY 24TH CR100 GROUP TRAINING 1 Month, 1 Week ago
It was a good run. It was a shakedown cruise for me and the PRS Ski. If there was a blooper segment I would definitely been in it.

Lessons learned.

PRS Ski's do not float very well when full of water....make sure hatches are secure. (Thanks to those who helped pull it out of the moving water at mile 12.5)

Wear different shoes - Thanks Mary for pointing that out.

Secure all items.

When hit from behind by a tandem Jensen... keep your cool...even if your rudder cable got tangled up.

How do you stop/prevent foot cramps....

Nice safari recovery run with good weather. My daughter and I ran this stretch in our aluminum boat in 4:25.

Another lesson learned - don't forget your electrolyte pills if you are drinking just straight water. That is unless you enjoy cramping for the next 12+ hours.

I have no accurate idea what my time was since I didn't check it after getting to Smithville....Probably around 4:15 give or take with two stops for hatch searches for forgotten items. I was in the red/white PRS ski.
