AQUA TERRA (NO SWIM) OFF ROAD TRI (ORT)

6.4 mi Paddle / 11 mi Mountain Bike / 4 mi Run
Back again for 2009 the Aqua Terra Off Road Tri will take place on the flowing waters of the Colorado River in Bastrop, Texas, utilizing the brand new El Camino Real Paddle Trail. The AT ORT is open to solo racers and two person teams and either kayaks or canoes may be used. Solo participating racers will complete the 3 discipline 22 mile course solo. In the team category one person will bike and one person will run however both must paddle in the same boat together. This scenic off road course will be fully marked and beginner friendly but challenging for all.

Being relatively new to TX (<2 yrs) I have to wonder.....
Why is there not a lot more traffic about what appears to be a great event? Is that stretch of water garbage-laden? Is the bike ride through a landfill?
Is the run through gang territories? What?
We had a series of these in Feb and March at my last (colder) duty assignment and the RD still had to cap registration a month ahead of time.
Not complaining, I love it here, nowhere else in the country I'd rather be.
(I know this because my wife tells me so).
Does the Martindale Tri get a good turnout?

This is a great race! Sorry to report that there are no gangs, landfills or rivers full of trash! It is a fun and relatively benign section of the Colorado River with some moving water, great jeep roads for riding, lots of hills, beautiful pine trees and trails that follow along the river. There have been other versions of this race over the years in different locations but last year was the first AT off road tri format. It was a huge success with about 70 people attending. Historically people here wait until the last minute to register. It doesn't reflect poorly on the event...just that people procrastinate.

The entry is in, boat procured, (I think), trail shoes cleaned, bike lubed.
This is now an AAA-level priority event.
Maybe I should get to the training part of the preparation now?

I am also signed up, but I didn't see the sign up list on the site. How many are signed up so far?

Anchor, want to get together and train sometime to run the course? we could shuttle.

Excellent suggestion. I'm going out there at the butt-crack o' dawn on Saturday the 28th. (1 week from tomorrow). I'm from S.A. but staying w/ fam in Austin Friday night the 27th.

There will be WIND! Oh, Lordy there will be wind.
We went out to Tahitian VIllage on Saturday to check out the course.
Logistically, a very good location for this event. The start point is
not far from the TA, (Transition Area), not what you were thinking.
Fun bike course if it is well marked for the event.
Run course is acceptable.
If you are looking for a fun event where tactics will play a role this is it.
If you are looking for the sheer beauty of central Texas.....look elsewhere.

Do you have any idea if you are going to do another one this fall. There is one in Houston (Paddle, Bike Run) on sept 12, but I'll hold off if you are going to put another ATORT on.
